How to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking
Public Speaking has been labeled as the one
event that more people fear over almost anything else they may
have to do in their lifetime. Even the idea that you
can overcome fear of public speaking can seem to be highly
improbable, especially for the person who is prone to anxiety
or panic attacks. Often those who must give a public speech may
start to worry about it long before the actual
event.

The feelings that manifest themselves on the
day of the speech may start out as nervousness and soon elevate
into a full blown panic attack. At this point the speaker may
feel as though they are having a heart attack, complete with
palpitations, dizziness and nausea. The symptoms can rapidly
elevate to the point where the speaker will find any excuse to
get out of the event so as to avoid having to deal with the
intense anxiety and physical feelings.
If you are in a position where public
speaking is necessary, because of your job or other position,
you already know that you must find a way to overcome your
fears. You cannot always avoid the speaking event,
there is going to come a time when you will have no choice
but to give a speech, so you must learn to overcome your
fears. For those who suffer from anxiety or panic
attacks, this may seem like an impossible task, but it is
not. You can learn to use your deepest fears to become a
good public speaker.
Stepping up to the podium or out on stage
can be hard for anyone and instills a sense of “what if they do
not like me or my speech?” in almost everyone. To help
you cope with these feelings you must remind yourself that
everyone has these same feelings and that they are perfectly
natural. Instead of letting them take over and dominate
you, you need to take these feelings and turn them around.
Instead of giving in to the fear, turn it into strength and use
the power behind it to drive you to present a better
speech. As long as you continue to let the feelings of
despair and of being incapable control your thoughts, the idea
of giving a successful speech cannot survive. You have to
remember that no matter what, you are the only one who knows
your speech and while others in the audience may have some
knowledge on the subject, at the moment you are the
expert. It is your speech and you need to stand up and
use the feelings that you are experiencing to let the audience
know that you are in control.
As many who have learned to control their
episodes of panic attacks can attest to, none of the feelings
you are experiencing can hurt you. Instead learn to tell
your mind that you are in control and there is nothing that it
can do that you cannot overcome. There is power in the
knowledge that you can be in control of your life and emotions
at all times. The next time you have to give a public
speech, remember to be well prepared. Know the material of your
speech and take a few minutes to relax your mind by telling
yourself that you are in control of the situation.
After the first speech that you give, using
the techniques of self empowerment, you should find that each
subsequent speech becomes a little easier. Over time and by
constantly reminding yourself that you are in control, you will
find that you can become a very successful speaker and the idea
of being anxious or having a panic attack simply no longer
occurs to you.
