Generally speaking, when you are going to
have a panic attack, you will know that it is coming. The
sensation can start out as a feeling of anxiousness or
nervousness and can quickly escalate into a full blown panic
attack. Worse still, when you perceive the fact that an
attack may be coming on, you will very often begin to
anticipate the attack. This anticipation then adds to the
fear of the attack and in fact is usually a contributing factor
to it.
The symptoms of your panic attack are
actually the physical manifestations of your overriding fear
and are generally a result of the brain going into the fight or
flight mode where it releases a flood of adrenaline to help the
body protect itself. Learning to accept this adrenaline rush for
what it is can help the sufferer learn how to take control
of the mind and in turn eliminate the panic attacks
altogether or at least to turn the situation around and be
able to channel the energy into positive action.
Whilst there can be no doubt that these
intense physical manifestations can be devastating, and
in many cases disabling, they are controllable as long as the
sufferer is willing to put in the work it takes to get them
under control. The first step is learning to recognize
the symptoms for what they are; they are the physical
representation of what is going on in your mind. This
does not mean that they do not exist; in fact quite the
opposite is true. For the average panic attack sufferer
the experience is as real as it gets.
To learn how to cope with a panic attack you
must learn to take these feelings and instead of fearing them,
take a good inward look at them and welcome them. Instead
of allowing the sensations to make you feel like you are going
to die, which you most certainly are not, embrace them like an
old friend. Use the power of these feelings to make you
feel more alive than ever. Surely if you can experience these
kind of feelings then you must be very much alive and in tune
with your body.
You must learn to accept these feelings with
the full knowledge that whilst they feel very real they can not
hurt you. In this way, you can say to yourself “If this
is the worst thing that ever happens to me, I am going to be
just fine.” By repeating this litany to yourself when you
start to feel an attack coming on, you can prepare yourself and
be ready to channel the feelings into a positive thought that
says ”I am in control”. When you are able to do this, you
can slowly begin to take your life back.

In the end you are the only person who can
help with controlling your panic attacks. Medications can
simply make the physical manifestations go away, but they
cannot take care of the underlying root cause of the attacks.
The root cause must be taken care of before you can
successfully learn to take control and be rid of your panic
attacks.
