These medications do work well to lower you anxiety levels very quickly, but they can do so at a cost.  They can cause some serious side effects and there is a risk of becoming seriously addicted to them if you take them for too long.  Once addicted, it can take many years to break the addiction.  Before you make the decision to start taking these medications, it might be a good idea to talk to more than one doctor or perhaps try alternative therapy treatments.

Doctors use several different medications in the treatment of anxiety and some of them are the same medications that are used to treat depression.  While these medications may seem to work well, they are not a cure and are only meant to be used as temporary way to control your anxiety until you learn how to control it yourself.  If you have not made the changes in your life necessary to gain control of your anxiety, your anxieties will return when you stop taking the medications.  Sometimes they will be even worse than they were to begin with.

Anti anxiety medications are tranquilizers and work by slowing down the central nervous system.  They are known for their ability to calm you down and let you relax and consequently can be very popular. Click here for Easy calm Video Coaching The most commonly recommended medications are the benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Valium, Ativan and Klonopin.  These medications can also be used as sleeping pills and muscle relaxants.   All of these medications work very quickly which makes them ideal for stopping panic and anxiety attacks.  Unfortunately, since anti anxiety medications work by slowing down the brain’s reactions to stress, they also cause unwanted side effects that can limit the activities you can take part in.  These medications can make you sleepy or leave you feeling unable to concentrate which make it unsafe to drive or operate machinery.  If you take a high enough dose, you may find that you are unable to concentrate well enough to work. Oddly if you take a benzodiazepine for too long it can make you depressed and possibly even feeling suicidal.

In extreme circumstances, anti anxiety medications have been found to cause excitability and an increase in anxiety.  These medications can also cause episodes of rage, mania, hallucinations and aggressive behavior in some people. These side effects however are quite rare and most often seen in children and the elderly, although they may also occur in those with other mental issues.

Please remember that whilst it may be fine to use anti anxiety drugs to bring swift relief from your anxiety attacks, they are only meant to be used for a very short period of time.  You should use them in conjunction with other forms of treatment such as cognitive behavior therapy to help you learn what the causes of your anxiety are and then how to control it without the need for medication.  It really is very possible to learn how to control you anxiety without medication.  You may need the help of a trained professional and a fair amount of desire and hard work on your part but rest assured you can succeed and live a live free from anxiety.
