Advice to Help you Overcome
Fear of Flying
The range of emotions when it comes to flying
can run from mild anxiety all the way to full bore
aviophobia and an ensuing panic attack. If you have had to
cancel a vacation or a business trip because the idea of
flying made you feel physically ill, you have aviophobia.
The symptoms can be as mild as being nervous about going
on a flight to being unable to even go near an airport or
watch an airplane on television. It can be very
challenging to overcome fear of flying, but with a little
effort and time well spent you can learn to relax and
enjoy flying on an airplane for your next
vacation.

Nothing else in the world may make you feel as
physically ill as the thought of getting on an airplane
does, whether it is the thought of being in a small seat
in airplane with dozens of other people or being 38,000
feet up with nowhere to go. Rest assured you are not
alone. Studies show that between 30% and 40% of all
people who fly suffer from some form of aviophobia. While
not all of them have a panic attack or are unable to fly,
they at least feel nervous at the thought.
If you want to overcome your fear of flying, you
must first find out what that fear is based on, meaning
that while your fear expresses itself as a fear of
flying, there is normally a root cause. The root cause
could be claustrophobia, or it could be the fact that
once you are in the plane you are unable to control your
destiny while in flight. At some point in time, something
must have triggered those feelings, such as reading about
or seeing a news report about a tragic plane
crash.
It is possible to overcome your fears without
the use of medications or expensive psychotherapists but
it will take time and effort on your part. First you must be able
to identify the trigger and then be prepared to take
action to overcome it. If your fear of flying
is based on being in the aircraft with the door closed,
you will need to spend some time sitting in an airplane
while it is on the ground.
Many airlines will help you with this by letting
you sit in an airplane that is not scheduled to
fly. You
will be able to sit in the seats, walk through the plane
and find the restrooms without having to worry about
flying.
Doing things this way will give you the time to become
comfortable with being inside an airplane while it is on
the ground and not full of other people. Be prepared to
spend plenty of time at the airport watching the planes
come and go and listening to the sounds of them landing
and taking off. This will help to
desensitize you to the airplane and its
surroundings.
If safety is the root cause of your fears, you
need to remind yourself that no matter how sensational
the television is when it comes to reporting on plane
crashes or how much the movies use plane crashes for
effect, the odds are far greater that you will have an
automobile accident. Millions of people fly
every day and the percentage of accidents is miniscule
when compared to automobile accidents. In fact flying is the
safest form of public transport.
